If you’re a health conscious individual, you must have grown tired of commercial toothpaste and tried to make one yourself. Homemade toothpaste is the best alternative to the store bought toothpaste because of the natural ingredients. Most commercial toothpaste tubes contain ingredients that are questionable and could possibly do more harm than protect your dental health. With chemicals like fluoride, triclosan, surfactants, artificial colors and dyes, and artificial sweeteners, you risk developing other health conditions such as mouth ulcers, teeth coloration, cavities, and possible heart conditions. For optimal dental hygiene, this post shares recipes and tips on how to make homemade toothpaste using readily available ingredients.

Ingredients Used to Make Homemade Natural Toothpaste Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a great moisturizer for your skin and hair. But its goodness doesn’t stop there. When used in toothpaste, it acts as an antibacterial and antifungal agent which ensures that your mouth is free of bacteria. The advantage of using coconut oil is that it doesn’t disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in your mouth. The only disadvantage with coconut oil is that it changes depending on the season. During winter, it can solidify and become difficult to use, while in the summer, it gives you a thinner toothpaste.

Baking Soda

The foods we eat are acidic which lead to cavities. Due to its alkalinity, baking soda neutralizes the acidity and helps to maintain a healthy pH balance in the mouth. Most bacteria thrive at a near-neutral pH (pH=7). Baking soda has a high pH level (pH=9), and in combination with salt, the environment isn’t inhabitable for bacteria.

Bentonite Clay

Bentonite is a great ingredient that gives your homemade toothpaste consistency. On top of that, it has a pH level of 8-10, which creates a not-so-hospitable environment for bacteria. Bentonite clay is also mineral rich and mildly abrasive.

Cacao

Cacao is a nice addition, especially for kids. It has a compound known as theobromine, which has been shown to help in remineralization of the teeth.

Xylitol

This is a type of sweetener that doesn’t cause cavities. Unlike artificial sweeteners, xylitol can help fight cavities by raising the pH level in your mouth, thus keeping bacteria at bay.

Salt

Salt acts as a natural preservative. It inhibits the growth and survival of harmful bacteria. Additionally, salt helps to stimulate saliva production which helps buffer the pH.
